illustrated portrait of Emily Bronte by Bianca Gschlecht
Cover illustration and portrait “Wuthering Heights”
In my cover illustration for “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë, I wanted to capture the dark and gloomy mood of the story and the harsh and twisted tone of the dialogues.

I went with the image of a rose, that is a recurring image in the text. For the final image I used a high contrast colour combination of red and a muddy, dark green. I combined it with a very rough and unpolished handlettering of the title, German: “Sturmhöhe”.

The illustration here is a personal illustration that gave me the idea to use a high contrast of light and shadow for the cover. Which is very much in line with Brontë’s intense and unsettlingly cruel novel.
