Designing an Alternate Book Cover For “the Love of Lemons” by Letitia Clark
I designed an alternate cover for “For the Love of Lemons”, a cookbook by Letitia Clark published by Hardie Grant London. My aim was to create a joyful, display-worthy design that celebrates the beauty of lemons while standing out in the recipe book market through bold and unexpected color choices.
The alternate cover needed to:
— Convey joy and feelings of love
— Showcase a passion for lemons through an organically shaped fruit bowl illustration
— Stand out in the cookbook market with a bright pink background rarely seen in recipe books, paired with two complementary shades of yellow
— Be a design that people would proudly keep on display rather than hide on a bookshelf

My Process
1. I began by reviewing my sketchbooks to find an illustration that matched the joyful, love-filled atmosphere I envisioned.
2. I selected a sketch of an organically shaped bowl with tasty lemons inside.
3. Switching to Procreate, I created a digital illustration of the sketch, with a vibrant color palette of one light and one bright yellow against the bold pink of the lemon bowl.
4. Then I finished the book cover in Adobe InDesign with adding title, author and subtitle in a soft, playful script font. With my font selection I added another layer of warmth and cheerfulness, while maintaining clear legibility for the book title.
Key Visual Elements
Organic fruit bowl of lemons as the central focus
Bright pink background for visual impact and market differentiation
Two shades of yellow to bring freshness and depth
Playful script typography for personality and softness
